Magi
Wise men from the East, little is
known about you, other than that you had humble hearts, humble because you were
ready to bow your knees to a newly identified King.
And take a long, arduous journey to
find him.
And that you possessed worldly
wealth. You carried treasure chests of gold, frankincense and myrrh with which
to honor this newborn King.
Nothing but a fine gift would do
for Kingship. You watched a spectacular star rise and light the way to Him. But
you needed more specific directions – and went to King Herod for information.
Herod had no knowledge for you but
wanted yours and called the religious teachers to meet you and explain the
prophecy to him.
Wise men, you left Herod speedily,
guided again by the star that directed you and lingered right over where Jesus
lay. Seeing Jesus you were filled with joy and so are we today.
After giving your loftiest respect,
you went home another way outwitting Herod. His fear over this new King born to
be greater than him led to Herod’s furious slaughter of innocent children two
and under.
Wise men, your visit to the little
family harboring this baby King, with a Kingdom yet to come, was followed by an
angelic visitor to Joseph. Yet another surprise in a litany of surprises for
this new father/guardian of God. The angel told Joseph to flee that very night
with his wife and child. And he did.
Magi you were part of the drama
unfolding as people sought to kill the truth, the good, the salvation that had
entered the world.
As they still do today.
May we proclaim God’s truth boldly.
Matthew
Chapter 2: 1-18
